Amber Light & Her Midnight Throne
Act 2: Crossing the Threshold, Watching With Aching Eyes
"Want me to grab you a water?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. He shook his head slightly, taking in the way the amber light played across the fine lines of her face—the curve of her cheekbone, the slope of her jawline that always looked so strong even when it was relaxed like this. The scent of vanilla and pine needles, faint as it was, seemed to intensify as she leaned forward, tilting her head slightly, almost daring him to take a step closer. He took one. She didn't flinch. Instead, he noticed the way her eyes held his gaze for just a beat longer than necessary before dropping back down to her textbook.
He felt a strange mixture of pride and frustration rising up within him—pride at the fact that she looked so comfortable, so confident in her own space, and frustration because even after years together he still couldn't quite figure out what went on during those late-night study sessions. He knew they weren't just about focusing; it felt like there was something else, some unspoken energy between her and the man who came by every week to sit with her at this very table.
"You know," she said, running a finger along the edge of her textbook, "you could come sit with me whenever you want. It's not like I have anything against company while I study." She raised an eyebrow at him playfully, her lips curving into a subtle smile that sent shivers down his spine. And for the first time in their relationship, he found himself wishing he wasn't the one providing the company—he wanted to be the subject of it instead.
He shifted closer, the space between them closing as he watched her inhale deeply from her cigarette, letting the smoke curl lazily around her face. "I know you don't want me there when you have him over," he said quietly, his voice raspy with a sudden surge of possessive jealousy.
"He doesn’t come over at night like this anymore." She exhaled slowly, fixing her gaze on his across the table, "But I think it would be easier to watch if you did." The way she looked at him—that directness, that quiet challenge in her eyes—made him wonder for a moment if he was actually the one who'd been keeping them apart. “So,” she leaned forward, resting her hand on his thigh and tracing gentle circles with her fingers against the curve of his knee. “What do you say? Come watch me study?”
