Little Haiti Heat: Street Cuckoldry in Northeast Miami

She stood on the curb, smoking a cigarette and tapping her fingers against the side of the aluminum can. The label was starting to peel, revealing the dark liquid inside—likely some cheap rum masquerading as an expensive spirit. He watched her through the thick glass windows of the bus stop shelter, his heart pounding in his chest like a drum.

His name was Eric, and he was a 32-year-old financial analyst from suburban Orlando. His life had been routine for years: work, commute, workout, eat, repeat. But today felt different. The air conditioning had broken at his office, and the building smelled like sweat and old money. He had parked his Honda Civic in the garage under the Florida sun and walked the two blocks to this bus stop, where the A1A bus would take him home.

As he waited, the rhythmic beat of kompa music drifted through the air from a nearby outdoor bar. The lyrics were unintelligible, but the melody was infectious. Two young men sat on benches near him, chatting in heavy Haitian Creole. Their laughter carried through the shelter. Eric felt like an outsider—too old, too pale, and too plain.

He had been staring at his phone for 10 minutes, scrolling aimlessly through Instagram, when her voice broke the silence: "You waiting on that bus too, or are you waiting on someone else?" He jumped a little, startled. She was standing right there, leaning against the side of the shelter with one hand propped up on her hip. Her hair was a wild mane of curls, and her red lipstick was smeared slightly at the corners of her mouth.

He blinked a few times, trying to find his voice. "Um...I'm waiting on the bus," he managed to say. "But I don't know who you mean." She smiled, flashing perfect white teeth. "I meant the guy with the gray hair and the nervous smile. Come here and sit down." She patted the bench next to her, gesturing for him to take a seat.

He hesitated for only a second before sitting down. Once he was settled, she reached across the space between them and touched his arm. "You don't look like you belong in this neighborhood, handsome," she said with a low, sultry voice. "What are you doing all the way out here?"
